Case-Based Learning in Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine

Course Description

This will be a case-based learning module with a breastfeeding and lactation medicine. This session will provide an opportunity to apply content learned during participation in the ACNM Breastfeeding Webinar Series. A total of 5 cases will be presented and discussed. Cases will demonstrate management of early engorgement and inflammation, hyperlactation, lactation-related wound care, perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), and mastitis.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Engage in a case-based learning to apply principles of complex lactation management.
2. Diagnose complex lactation-related conditions and select appropriate non-pharmacologic and pharmacologic management strategies.
3. Integrate content across topics reviewed in the breastfeeding webinar series for clinical decision-making in realistic case scenarios.

Katie T. Kivlighan PhD, CNM



Speakers Bios
Katie T. Kivlighan, PhD, RN, CNM (she/her) is an assistant professor and certified nurse midwife at The University of New Mexico (UNM) College of Nursing. Her research interests focus on developing accessible, non-invasive screening tools and targeted treatments to address suboptimal lactation outcomes. Since 2014, Dr. Kivlighan has practiced as a certified nurse midwife with the University Midwifery Associates in the UNM Department of OB/GYN, working with both rural and underserved populations. She teaches antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care in the UNM Nurse-Midwifery Program. She is also a co-coordinator of the UNM Hospital Volunteer Birth Companion Program, a birth-justice focused program that aims to provide respectful, compassionate, and non-judgmental care to birthing people who may not otherwise be able to access continuous birth support. Dr. Kivlighan earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Biobehavioral Health from The Pennsylvania State University and completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She earned a Post-Master’s Certificate in Nurse-Midwifery from UNM, a Master’s of Science in the Clinical Nurse Leader Program at the University of Maryland Baltimore.
