Course Description
This is an 8-hour workshop split between two days (Friday and Saturday). This course will provide opportunities to engage an in-depth exploration of what establishing and maintaining a midwifery practice entails.For midwifery practice leaders (and aspiring
leaders). Explores components of
leadership, financial management, strategic planning, staffing, quality
management, and performance evaluation.
Participants will receive a workbook that includes all workshop slides,
example forms for processes discussed, and worksheets to outline their own next
steps and action plans.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the fundamental knowledge, behaviors and skills needed to lead effectively, describe where they are on a leadership development continuum, and develop useful Action Plans for their practice and their own leadership growth.
2. The learner will identify standard items in a practice budget, learn basic forecasting of income and expenses, and identify financial data sources that exist in institutions.
3. The learner will be able to identify theory base, discuss practical approaches, and design their own approach to selected leadership functions, including running effective meetings, developing a strategic plan, quality management, calculating staff workload, and scheduling.

Susan DeJoy, CNM, PhD
Speakers Bios
Susan
DeJoy, CNM, PhD, received Bachelor of Science degrees from SUNY Geneseo and
SUNY Downstate in biology and nursing, a Master of Science in Nursing with a
concentration in midwifery from the University of Pennsylvania, and a doctorate
in Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the University of Massachusetts School of
Public Health and Health Sciences. Dr.
DeJoy was inducted into ACNM Fellowship in 1997.
Dr.
DeJoy was a practicing certified nurse-midwife from 1982 to 2022, and at
Baystate Medical Center in Springfield MA from 1986 to the present. As Chief of
the Division of Midwifery at Baystate until January 2017, she developed a full
scope midwifery practice, a midwifery triage program, and a collaborative
clinical teaching program for residents and medical students. She also
established the Baystate Midwifery Education Program in 1991, and served as its
Director until 1996. Presently, she
serves as Senior Research Coordinator for the Division of Midwifery. She is on faculty at the Baystate Midwifery
Education Program, the Baystate-UMass Chan School of Medicine and the Tufts
University School of Medicine.
Dr.
DeJoy is a partner in the consulting firm Midwifery EDD, which assists academic
medical centers in establishing midwifery clinical practices and education
programs.
