Many individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices have difficulty acquiring grammar. Explicit instruction, not simply exposure to good grammar is required for AAC users to acquire grammar. When SLPs understand AAC language systems and evidence-based approaches to grammar instruction, they can effectively support language development for AAC users. This presentation will expand upon a thematic unit grammar intervention proposed by Bolden (2022) to explore how AAC users benefit from using the specific approaches including the whole-part-whole strategy and traditional grammatical cycling. Learn how to leverage EBP interventions to better support linguistic competence for AAC users.
Learning Objectives
- Describe one or more difference between spoken language grammatical intervention and grammatical intervention with student who use AAC.
- Identify three or more grammatical targets for language intervention for students who use AAC.
- Discuss at least two strategies or accommodations to support grammar intervention for students who use AAC.
