Overview

How do you get started when a bilingual client uses an AAC device? This session provides an overview of PRC-Saltillo vocabulary files that can be used with bilingual speakers, including Spanish and French language systems. We will highlight features that allow for easy transition between two languages, as well as demonstrate customization based on dialectal or colloquial differences. Activities and resources that can be used to help bilingual individuals have success with AAC will also be shared. You will leave this presentation with valuable strategies and materials to increase an individual’s language skills and use of AAC.

Biography

Brittany earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology from Miami University in 2009. After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree, Brittany studied abroad at a language school in Madrid, Spain to improve her Spanish speaking abilities, then went on to pursue her Master’s Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the University of Cincinnati in 2012. Prior to joining PRC-Saltillo in December 2019, Brittany served as a speech-language pathologist for over 7 years in the private pediatric sector, serving children ages 18 months to 23 years of age. For 5 years, Brittany worked primarily with children and young adults on the Autism Spectrum, as well as individuals with developmental disabilities at a private school-based treatment facility. Brittany fostered a passion for assisting nonverbal clients in obtaining alternative and augmentative means to communicate, and completed AAC evaluations, directed treatment, as well as implemented classroom programs with school support staff in order to assist students in generalizing skills across environments. In addition, Brittany provided speech-generating device use and implementation trainings to staff, parents, and other service professionals to aid the entire team in understanding AAC, and how to foster independent, functional communication with clients across a variety of settings.
Brittany holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), as well as a state license in Speech-Language Pathology from the State of Ohio.

Sarah Waldman, MS, CCC-SLP

PRC-Saltillo, AAC Consultant

Biography

Sarah is bilingual in English and Spanish and enjoys working with multicultural and multilingual families. After graduating with a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and prior to joining Saltillo, she held positions as an AAC Specialist in a hospital-based outpatient rehabilitation center and as the lead AAC therapist at a private practice. AAC has always been a passion for Sarah, and she believes that helping families and clinicians find the right communication system for a child or individual is such a rewarding process. She loves educating and training others to become comfortable with AAC as they implement it into their everyday routines.
