Overview

Parent/caregiving is a role that most individuals engage in. For individuals with physical disabilities, the experience of helping care for a child can be daunting, due to barriers/challenges that can arise. This presentation is geared toward exploring different AT strategies and devices, resources, and the process of choosing AT to help aid with childcare tasks. Childcare tasks that will be addressed include safe transportation, dressing, bathing, feeding, and infant social interaction.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify three assistive technology devices or strategies that can assist caregivers with physical disabilities with providing childcare in a safe way.
  2. Describe two or more ways to gather and apply data using the HATT model to determine appropriate assistive technology devices to recommend for caregivers with physical disabilities providing childcare.
  3. Identify two resources to guide caregivers with physical disabilities access to services/support/blogs/adaptive parenting products to facilitate further knowledge on this topic.

Biography

Christey Kirk, COTA and ATP is an Assistive Technologist with the North Carolina Assistive Technology Program. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Lenoir-Rhyne University in Human Occupational Studies with a minor in Psychology as well as an Associate of Science degree from Central Piedmont Community College in Occupational Therapy Assistant. She has worked for the North Carolina Assistive Technology Program since August of 2020. She has an occupational therapy background working with the aging population in skilled nursing facilities and home health.

Biography

Brittany Hawley MSOT, OTR/L, ATP is an Assistive Technologist with the North Carolina Assistive Technology Program. She has been with the North Carolina Assistive Technology Program since 2021. Brittany has a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Campbell University. She has a Master of Science in Occupational Therapy from Clarkson University. Brittany has experience with pediatrics and transition.
