Overview

Charts, graphs, complex equations, and other types of notation oh my! Join us on this inclusive mathematical journey where we will explore a variety of instructional and design strategies that North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS) has implemented to diverse learners the slice of Pi they deserve. In this session, you participants will learn how NCVPS has internally developed over 20 blended and online math courses ranging from middle school through traditional high school, honors, and Advanced Placement levels which include built in accommodations, modifications and accessibility features that are available to all teachers and students.

Thomas Cooper

North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS), Instructional Director

Biography

Dr. Thomas Cooper III serves as the Instructional Director for Math for NC Virtual. He joined NC Virtual in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic as schools were shifting to online learning. Thomas has 14 years of experience teaching in the United States at the elementary and middle school levels where he served as a teacher and an administrator. He also has experience teaching abroad in the Japan Exchange and Teaching Programme working in the Kobe Board of Education elementary and middle school settings. During his time at NC Virtual, Thomas has developed and piloted districtwide co-teaching online options for both special education courses to grow their PLCs and school districts struggling to find qualified teachers.

Chris Smith

North Carolina Virtual School (NCVPS), Instructional Designer

Biography

Chris Smith currently serves as an Instructional Designer with North Carolina Virtual Public School (NCVPS). He has worked as an educator in North Carolina for 22 years where he has served as an elementary teacher, district-level technology facilitator, Director of Distance Education, and Instructional Designer. He serves on the NC Accessible Educational Materials Leadership Team, co-chairs the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee for the NC Technology in Education Society Board of Directors, and is a member of the Accessibility Committee for the Association for Educational Communications & Technology (AECT). Chris moderates the video and audio support area for the Quality Matters Accessibility and Usability Site (AURS) and served as the Team Leader for General Standard 8: Accessibility and Usability on the K-12 Quality Matters Rubric 5th Edition Revision Team. Dr. Smith teaches graduate courses in educational technology, instructional design, and supporting diverse learners and serves as a part-time Senior Instructional Designer for the University of Denver.
