Overview

This presentation will focus on building a common language that SLPs, TVIs, and other educators can use to discuss their students’ visual behaviors and how they may impact language learning and AAC use. This session aims to provide SLPs with language they can use to help TVIs understand why abstract symbols are a necessary component of AAC systems and to provide TVIs with an understanding of how expressive language learning with AAC works.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the difference between the label of “Cerebral” vs. “Cortical” vision impairment.
  2. Name at least three categories of visual behaviors seen in individuals with CVI.
  3. Discuss at least three intervention strategies for teaching vocabulary and language on an AAC system to individuals with CVI.

Biography

Amanda specializes in working with individuals with complex communication needs who use AAC systems. Amanda owns a private practice, AACreATively Communicating LLC., providing speech-language therapy, consultation, and professional development workshops. She recently completed a program to be a Teacher of the Visually Impaired to provide better support to her clients. She is an adjunct professor at Gallaudet University.
