Optimal professional practice requires a working knowledge of current healthcare code sets i.e., Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and the International Classification of Diseases and Disorders, 10th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM).

Participants will receive guidance to accurately use procedure codes (CPT) and diagnosis codes (ICD-10-CM) for claim submissions and payment. Guidance includes a discussion about billing multiple procedures for same date of service, an explanation of CPT coding for time-based and untimed SLP procedure codes as well as instruction for required modifiers and edits that provide coding clarification and accuracy.

Participants will also explore ICD-10-CM coding principles and policies relevant to ICD-10 codes commonly used by speech-language pathologists. Clinical scenarios will be presented to enhance understanding and application of information. Participants will receive a coding and payment update for 2023.

Learning Objectives

• Compare purpose and function of the two main healthcare codes sets: International Classification of Disease-10-CM (ICD-10-CM) and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT).
• Name two ICD-10-CM coding principles.
• Describe the only coding modifier applied on the claim form in association with a National Correct Coding Initiative (NCCI) edit that allows multiple SLP procedures to be reported for the same date of service to the same beneficiary

Dee Adams Nikjeh, PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow
Dee Adams Nikjeh, PhD, CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow, is an expert in health care code sets, compliance requirements, and billing practices for the field of speech-language pathology (SLP). She co-chairs ASHA's Health Care Economics Committee and is the SLP advisor on the American Medical Association's Relative Value Update Committee/Health Care Professionals Advisory Committee. Dr. Nikjeh's professional career in the field of communication sciences and disorders spans four decades as a clinician, researcher, educator, expert witness for the US Department of Justice Civil Division, coding and claims consultant, and an advocate for the profession. She has served on ASHA's Legislative Council and the Executive Board of the Council of State Association Presidents and is a past-president of the Florida Association of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
