Championing Mental Health and Inclusive Practices is designed to provide staff and faculty the knowledge, awareness, and skills to be champions of mental health and inclusive practices. Through this program, participants will have an opportunity to do the following: 1) learn how to support individuals experiencing mental health concerns and how to make appropriate referrals; 2) explore ways to promote culturally responsive care; and 3) learn ways to increase wellbeing and promote human flourishing.

• Build confidence and self-efficacy in supporting students’ mental health while gaining the awareness and skills to identify signs of individuals in distress and crisis.
• Learn about stereotypes and bias and the harmful impact of microaggressions and racial trauma; and increase knowledge and awareness to better support LGBTQIA+ individuals.
• Understand the concept of flourishing and learn about the building blocks that enable human flourishing, and learn activities designed to increase well-being and promote flourishing.

Speakers

Ahmed Ghuman , PsyD, MBA, LPC
University of Pittsburgh

Ahmed Ghuman (he/him/his) is a Clinical Psychologist who serves as the Executive Director of the University Counseling Center at University of Pittsburgh (Pitt). Ahmed earned a PsyD in clinical psychology from Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. In his clinical work, Ahmed utilizes an integrative approach of humanistic and cognitive behavioral therapy. Additionally, he specializes in positive psychology and uses a strengths-based approach rooted in positive psychotherapy with his clients. His areas of interest include self-esteem, happiness, motivation, resilience, meaning and purpose, religious and spiritual identity, and multicultural concerns. As a clinical supervisor, Ahmed utilizes a strength’s-based approach while also promoting cultural sensitivity in supervision. His leadership style focuses on inclusive leadership principles that promote cultural humility, curiosity, and collaboration amongst staff

Bernadette Smith, LPC
University of Pittsburgh

Bernadette (she/her/hers) is a licensed professional counselor with over a decade of experience in a variety of mental health settings. As Associate Director of Outreach, Bernadette works to develop and strengthen partnerships with campus and community partners to support student emotional well-being through a holistic and culturally informed lens. She believes a culture of care is critical to creating an environment in which students can thrive and therefore she developed the Mental Health Champion Certificate Program to increase awareness and support on campus. Bernadette also co-chairs the University of Pittsburgh’s Campus Well-being Consortium and was instrumental in the development of Thrive @ Pitt, a university-wide initiative aimed at educating students on the topic of well-being while connecting them to resources.
