Description:
Client sexuality can be taboo, provocative or intimidating for the therapist. The complex and conflicting messages we receive socioculturally don’t help any and in most clinical training, the subject isn’t even broached. Sexuality is more than a source of trauma, a public health issue, and a political football. Despite social messages about the taboo nature of sexuality, case studies demonstrate how a sex positive focus with sex therapy techniques can be incorporated into other treatment modalities to lead to desired outcomes for clients (Baggett, et al., 2017). Part 2 of Sex Therapy 101 will address safety in the therapy room and a lens for acknowledging trauma. Attendees of Part 2 will be able to apply the concept of “safety” to sex therapy case examples. In addition, participants will be introduced to and learn how to apply the PLISSIT model (permission, limited information, specific suggestions, and intensive therapy) to sex therapy practice. The PLISSIT technique can effectively reduce sexual disfunction (Bennett, 2019) and improve satisfaction (Malakouti, Golizadeh, Mirghafourvand, & Farshbaf-Khalili, 2020). In addition to lecture, the presenter will utilize case presentation and exploration as well as answering participant questions.

Agenda:
5-5:05pm Introduction and Grounding Rules
5:05-5:50pm Fostering Safety: Exercises
5:55-6:50pm PLISSIT: Deep Dive, Resources, Case Study
6:50-7pm Question and Answer Session

*This program has no breaks.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will apply the concept of ‘safety’ in therapy to case examples.

Participants will be able to explain how to apply each of the four levels of intervention in the PLISSIT model (permission, limited information, specific suggestions, and intensive therapy) in sex therapy.

Instructor Bio:
Amy K. Bucciere, LCSW, CST (she/hers)

It’s all about the space between. Relationships make us who we are. Be it with the past, with individuals, with the future or with one’s own self, skilled and insightful connecting leads to a more fulfilled life. But all sorts of barriers can emerge, and the sexual sort can be especially difficult. I work with individuals, couples, relationship systems and groups to heal and grow the kinds of connections they really want.

I am a psychotherapist and clinical supervisor based in the Pittsburgh area. I specialize in relationships, sex and EMDR, and am certified in each (via Imago Relationship Therapy, AASECT and EMDRIA respectively). I also supervise sex therapists toward certification.

Social workers, marriage and family therapists, and professional counselors in Pennsylvania can receive continuing education from providers approved by the American Psychological Association. Since CBI is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education, licensed social workers, licensed marriage and family therapists, and licensed professional counselors in Pennsylvania will be able to fulfill their continuing education requirements by attending CBI continuing education programs. For professionals outside the state of Pennsylvania, you must confirm with your specific State Board that APA approved CE's are accepted towards your licensure requirements. The Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) has a process for approving individual programs or providers for continuing education through their Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. ACE approved providers and individual courses approved by ASWB are not accepted by every state and regulatory board for continuing education credits for social workers. Every US state other than New York accepts ACE approval for social workers in some capacity: New Jersey only accepts individually approved courses for social workers, rather than courses from approved providers. The West Virginia board requires board approval for live courses, but accepts ASWB ACE approval for other courses for social workers. For more information, please see https://www.aswb.org/ace/ace-jurisdiction-map/. Whether or not boards accept ASWB ACE approved continuing education for other professionals such as licensed professional counselors or licensed marriage and family therapists varies by jurisdiction. To determine if a course can be accepted by your licensing board, please review your board’s regulations or contact them. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit.
