Innovations and Elevations in Care Management Learning and Development

**Presented at the 2022 CMSA Annual Conference**
*** RN and CCM credits ***
2020 was a year of innovation and change as technology and virtual literacy became more important than ever before in healthcare. As a result, there was a need to explore more opportunities for virtual learning and engagement in case manager training to ensure they meet the multi-faceted needs of members in this new landscape. The virtual Care Management Learning Journey is an innovative blend of Digital, Instructor Led Learning, and Preceptorship, designed to develop high caliber Care Managers. Regional Instructors facilitate Virtual Instructor Led Learning to Care Management staff across the enterprise, while eLearning content is delivered through the Learning Management System. Over a four-week period, learners are presented with an integrated eLearning and Virtual Instructor Led curriculum designed to maximize comprehension of concepts. Recall and comprehension are measured through routine knowledge checks, repeat demonstration, and testing. Interactive group learning encourages team building, partnership, and collaboration, mirroring the important member engagement skills utilized as a Care Manager. Virtual shadowing and Preceptor time provides Care Managers the opportunity for practical application of Learning Journey content. The Learning Journey imparts future Care Managers with best practices and nationally supported evidenced-based standards, including Motivational Interviewing and Person Centered Thinking and Planning. The Learning Journey is further refined to meet the contractual requirements of individual markets via specialized Health Plan and Line of Business instruction. The Learning Journey is designed to build the critical skills of Care Managers in preparation for work with populations with complex needs and technical skills they need to effectively access resources and interact with member, families, and providers. This innovative model allows actualization of our purpose to transform the health of the community, one person at a time.
