Day 1 - Thursday, February 29
1:00 PM ET - Opening Address and Keynote: Climate, equity and the social determinants of health
Keynote presenter will speak to how the climate crisis impacts all of our social determinants of health, in addition to impacting our health directly. They will give some key examples to stress the urgency of the moment, and the importance and value of multi-solving. Everyone has a role in combating this crisis, and we can all make a difference in our professions and day-to-day lives.

1:20 PM ET - Panel: The climate crisis, social determinants, and deepening health disparities
Panelists will discuss some of the many disparities in access to the social determinants of health, the ways these disparities are being deepened by the climate crisis, and innovative, multisolving solutions that center equity.

2:00 PM ET - Breakout Session 1: Social Determinants of Health
Attendees will self-select into breakout rooms for in-depth, facilitated discussions on various social determinants of health, and be asked to dream up solutions together that address both climate and their selected social determinant of health.

3:15 PM ET - Keynote Address: Climate Change and Health Equity: Taking the Long View
While there is an urgent need to address the disproportionate health threats associated with climate change, necessary transformation of the health sector will require ongoing efforts to change practice and policies. Dr. Balbus will highlight the types of change needed for sector transformation and outline how the Office of Climate Change and Health Equity is approaching the need to protect populations now while putting in place the measures to support long-term change.

3:25 PM ET - Panel: Finding support for climate, health and equity in unlikely places
Speakers will share examples of unconventional programs, policies and interventions that have advanced climate progress while centering health equity here and abroad, highlighting creative cross-sectoral solutions and collaborations, particularly those that have centered community voices and expertise.

4:05 PM ET - Breakout Session 2: Non-climate programs where we can make climate, health and equity progress
Attendees will self-select into breakout rooms for in-depth, facilitated discussions on various program and policy areas where there are opportunities to build in solutions and access resources for progress on climate, health and equity.

Day 2 - Friday, March 1
1:00 PM ET - Opening Address

1:10 PM ET - Communications Skill Building Workshops
Participants will select their preferred workshop from the options below, hear a brief presentation on key communication skills and tips for reaching and educating decision makers, and work through a few practice scenarios with facilitators.

  • Option C: Talking to your boss
  • Option D: Talking to the public

2:10 PM ET - Break

2:25 PM ET - Presentation: Cross-sectional work on climate, health and equity at APHA

2:35 PM ET - Panel: Intersectional climate work being done by APHA sections
Speakers from various APHA sections will highlight how climate, health and equity have been incorporated as part of their work, and the value that has brought in terms of partnerships, impact and visibility.

3:15 PM ET - Breakout Session 3: Climate, health and equity across public health disciplines
Attendees will self-select into breakout rooms based on the APHA member section they are most involved in (or would like to get involved with/partner with if not a current APHA member). Groups will be prompted to discuss how climate, health and equity can be incorporated into planned/existing work and what potential new work can be undertaken.
  • Rooms will be created based on which sections are represented in attendance

4:00 PM ET - Break

4:15 PM ET - Breakout Session 4: Inviting collaboration
Attendees will self-select into breakout groups listed on screen, each corresponding to a project submitted during the break. The person who submitted said project will be the “host” of that room. Attendees can move between rooms as they please during this time if they’d like to discuss multiple opportunities.
