Write to be Heard Series: Enhancing Your Professional Profile

Using Writing to Enhance Your Professional Profile

cOURSE OVERVIEW

Learn how to take your writing skills beyond drafting briefs and legal documents and put them to work to enhance your professional profile. Those who have mastered the art know the demands of busy schedules and heavy workloads and understand the importance of minimizing the time and resources required to achieve the goal. Zoom in to explore an array of legal-writing genres and learn how you can create written pieces for publication by repurposing knowledge acquired in daily practice and using it to educate peers, highlight emerging issues or trends, and raise awareness of developments or people in the law. Legal writers who have used these strategies effectively will share their individual perspectives on how and where to begin. It’s easier than you might imagine.

By the end of this course, you will:

  • Learn how to utilize everyday legal work as a starting point for creating articles and pieces of interest.
  • Become familiar with various genres of legal writing.
  • Explore how to create issue-awareness pieces, turn new experiences or "lessons learned" into publishable pieces, and craft other writings that inform and educate the legal community.
  • Gain insights into working with bar associations and professional groups in creating and submitting articles for their publications.
  • Hear a variety of tips for submitting articles and working with editors in getting them published.
