Description

In this session you will learn how the University of Pittsburgh was able to size up by using spend analytics to identify rogue spend. Presenters share how they identified an opportunity to implement a strategy for an online food ordering and expense management system. In addition to driving compliance and increasing commissions with their main food service provider by channeling rogue spend; this analysis will show process, cost savings, and efficiencies through online ordering that do not currently exist. The team from Pitt will provide an overview of how spend analytics was applied resulting in savings and benefits the University recognized as a result of this strategy.

  2. To select the best category that could result in savings and benefits.
  3. To explore how to use process mapping to estimate inefficient processes with hard and soft dollar savings.

    Lauren Leonard is the Sourcing Analyst in the Strategic Sourcing and PantherExpress Systems Solutions Department at the University of Pittsburgh for the past 4 ½ years. Lauren manages and administers the spend analytics tool, maintains spend classification and data normalization, creates key performance indicator reports for the Financial Operations department, and develops and analyzes spend in support of sourcing and commercial partnership events.

    Prior to joining the University, Lauren worked for three years at the Missile Defense Agency as an Operations Research Analyst and three years at the US Department of Homeland Security as a Cost Estimator.  Lauren has a Master’s Degree in Systems Engineering and Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering from Penn State University. Lauren lives in Pittsburgh with her husband, Ben, two year old, Calvin, and her two dogs Lily and Bonnie.

    Director, Strategic Sourcing

    Michelle Lynn Smith is the Director of Strategic Sourcing and PantherExpress System Solutions at the University of Pittsburgh. For the past 13 years she has led major sourcing events in categories including scientific, furniture, computers and computer supplies, office supplies and most recently food services. She also led the selection and implementation of a spend analytics solution and is responsible for the management of purchasing spend data and classification. In her role as Director, she is also responsible for the University’s Commercial Partnership Program.

    Prior to joining the University, Michelle worked at Fisher Scientific as a Product Manager and Buyer for 8 years. Michelle also has an MB A from Waynesburg University, a bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Duquesne University, a Certification in Supply Chain Management (CPSM), Certification in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) and her Project Management Professional (PMP) certification.

    Personally, Michelle is born and raised in Pittsburgh where she lives with her husband, Mark, their 9 year old daughter Sophie and 2 rescue pit bulls Sylvie and Remy.
