Inflation and Prices: A practical look at how business firms can utilize CPI and PPI data in price adjustment (escalation) clauses

Course Description
Business firms in search of effective methods for coping with changes in prices often employ price adjustment (escalation) clauses in long-term sales and purchase contracts. BLS estimates that agreements with a lifetime worth in the trillions of dollars are currently adjusted using the Producer Price Index (PPI) family of indexes, either alone or in conjunction with other sources of economic data. Timothy Ewing, Regional Economist in the BLS Atlanta Economic Analysis and Information Office, will provide a virtual workshop on how to use the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Producer Price Index (PPI) for escalation. Mr. Ewing will provide an brief overview of the BLS, guidance on the development of price adjustment clauses in contracts that are to be tied BLS data, and go over examples of price adjustment procedures.

Timothy Ewing
Timothy Ewing became Regional Economist for the BLS Atlanta Regional Office in 2016. Prior to that, Mr. Ewing served as an Economist in both the Compensation and Price Programs. As Regional Economist, Mr. Ewing is responsible for the dissemination of BLS data through various avenues including news releases, articles, marketing, and presentations.
Mr. Ewing received a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics and a Master of Science in Applied Economics from Georgia Southern Universit
