Program Overview
This learning activity was developed in partnership between the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and the National Environmental Education Foundation (NEEF). The purpose is to support development of skills and knowledge required by the school nurse to identify environmental triggers and implement evidence-based (i.e., National Health, Blood, and Lung Institute’s National Asthma Education and Prevention Program’s Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma; NEEF’s Environment Management of Pediatric Asthma Guidelines for Health Care Providers) environmental interventions to effectively manage and improve health outcomes for students with asthma.

Learning Outcomes
As a result of participating in this educational activity, learners will be able to
  • Describe the top six Guidelines Implementation Panel messages and underlying EPR 3 recommendations of the asthma management guidelines.
  • List three strategies describing how school nurses, healthcare professionals, community members, and academic partners can collaborate to manage student asthma successfully.
  • Describe the procedure for assessing the health status of a student with asthma.
  • Describe prevention and intervention strategies to eliminate exposure to common environmental triggers.
  • Demonstrate proper use of the environmental history form to assess student environmental exposures.
Intended Audience
This continuing education program is a knowledge-based activity developed to meet the educational needs of registered nurses who are interested in child and adolescent health.
