Description

Guests:  Lindsey Justice, NP and Megan Horsley, RD
Hosts:  Maryam Naim, MD and Jill Zender, NP

Neonates with single ventricle physiology experience poor growth, which translates into adverse short and long-term outcomes. Providing adequate nutrition for this population is difficult due to volume restrictions and issues with tolerance of fortification. Additionally, a standardized feeding protocol is lacking, and clinician practice is highly variable. A multicenter, randomized controlled trial was conducted (and recently published) to evaluate the use of an Exclusive Human Milk Diet (EHMD) compared to standard of care in neonates following stage 1 palliation. Our speakers will discuss the details of the study, and the effect of EHMD on growth, feeding tolerance, and other outcomes in this vulnerable population.
