Description

This webinar features experts dealing with questions of sustainability and fire safety from different points of view. They will lead with short presentations concerning their perspective on fire safety and sustainability, followed by a panel discussion.

  • Benjamin Ralph

    Dr Benjamin Ralph is a Partner and Head of Fire Safety at Foster + Partners. He is a Chartered Engineer (registered both with IFE and IMechE), Fellow the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers. Benjamin is dedicated to early and integrated fire safety design, achieved through risk-based engineering and iterative creation. He has conducted research at the Building Research Establishment and National Institute of Standards and Technology and led fire safety designs for projects worth up to £7 billion. Benjamin is passionate about diversity, equality, and inclusion, particularly creating inclusive spaces for all abilities and neurodiversities. He holds a civil engineering degree from the University of Southampton, a fire safety engineering postgraduate degree from the University of Ulster, and a fire science PhD from the University of Edinburgh. He is an External Examiner at Birmingham City University, Visiting Professor at Brunel, published author, STEM Ambassador, guest lecturer, and serves on various committees and steering groups including the Building Advisory Committee formed by the HSE Building Safety Regulator.

  • Nelly Martinez

    Nelly is a licensed Architect in Colombia specializing in sustainability and the built environment. She has a master’s degree in Environmental Design & Engineering from the University College of London and is a LEED AP BD+C and BREEAM Assessor. Nelly has substantial experience in sustainable design integration, environmental certifications, circular economy and low carbon strategies. She is passionate about positive design impacts on social balance, wellbeing and prosperity. She joined Foster + Partners in 2015 driving innovation in the climate change agenda and working throughout different project stages, on projects of various types and scales, ranging from products and buildings to masterplans and cities.

  • Nathan Millar

    Nathan Millar is a Partner in Foster + Partners Environmental Engineering team. He has over 15-years’ experience coordinating and implementing innovative MEP, environmental, and sustainable strategies and solutions for projects across the globe.
    He works closely as part of our integrated design teams in the development and implementation of tangible project targets and outcomes. Nathan works on projects of all scales to deliver holistic and systematic environmental sustainability enhancements, with a close focus on the application of computational environmental design and analysis tools, to deliver high-performance projects.
    Nathan re-joined Foster + Partners from Introba (formally Elementa Consulting) where he was the regional lead of the Environmental Design and Sustainability team, his work included the development of building decarbonisation strategies, implementation of net zero strategies for projects, the development of net zero roadmaps for projects and businesses, and development of ESG strategies.
    Nathan is a LEED AP BD+C.

  • Brian Meacham

    Brian is Director of Risk & Regulatory Consulting at Crux Consulting. He develops risk-informed performance-based solutions to complex building and infrastructure challenges, provides peer-review services, and conducts building and fire regulatory system studies. He also undertakes research in these areas as well as in sustainable and fire resilient built environments, fire safety technologies and sociotechnical systems approaches for fire. He has undertaken work for government entities, the private sector, and NGOs around the world. Brian serves as Trustee and Immediate Past Chair of the International Association for Fire Safety Science (IAFSS) and Chair of the Code Development Committee for the International Code Council (ICC) Performance Code.He is a past Chair of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Technical Committee on Fire Risk Assessment Methods, a Past President of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), a past Chair of the Inter-jurisdictional Regulatory Collaboration Committee (IRCC), and a past Chair of the US TAG to ISO TC92 TC4, fire safety engineering. Brian is a licensed Professional Engineer in Connecticut and Massachusetts, a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Fire Engineers (UK), a registered European Engineer (EUR ING), a Fellow of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE), a Fulbright Global Scholar, and a Fulbright Specialist.
