This Clinical Update in Addiction Medicine was originally presented at the SGIM22 annual meeting in Orlando (April 2022).
Deaths from drug overdose increased to a record 93,000 in the United States in the past year, making the provision of evidence-based care to people who use these substances more urgent than ever. Overdose is now the leading cause of accidential death in the United States, so providing services in inpatient and outpatient settings is increasingly urgent. This update provides internists with evidence-based approaches to build those skill sets.
In this update, presenters will critically review and present the most important peer-reviewed literature from the past two years that can guide generalists in caring for patients with substance use disorders. Presenters will cover identification and management of substance use disorders in primary care settings, primary care-based pharmacotherapy for substance use disorders, the effects of substance misuse on chronic health conditions, and disparities in substance use disorder outcomes and treatment access.
