When a church receives a major gift, it is received with celebration. People start thinking about all the ways it will strengthen the church’s mission. However, there are also potentially negative impacts the gift can have on a congregation’s self-understanding and stewardship. Jim draws on his experience of helping a congregation think through how to receive a $16 million estate gift to talk about these potential impacts and how to avoid them.
