Module 5 - Managing the Innovation of Translational Sciences

Module Objectives

Successfully guiding a new compound through the translational research phase requires the expertise, insight, and cooperation of scientists from diverse disciplines. This module will provide information on the following topics:
  • Describe techniques for synthesizing existing knowledge so that interdisciplinary teams can design more effective development programs and recognize critical knowledge gaps before they result in unpleasant surprises later in development.
  • Describe common pitfalls to effective working relationships among these partners. It will provide tools and techniques for avoiding breakdowns in communication, disconnected work efforts, and wasted resources.
  • Describe a resource allocation model for assessing program resource requirements, assigning responsibilities, anticipating the need for contingencies, and managing the timelines of complex projects.
Upon completion of this fifth module, the learner should be able to:
  1. Discuss the basics of a research and development ecosystems and the challenge of innovation;
  2. Describe the application of precompetitive collaboration to field of biomarkers; and
  3. Explain the principles of project management in the translational science space.
