Description

The START Read strategy, adapted for preschoolers who are deaf and hard of hearing, encompasses multiple reads of the same book to develop Tier 2 vocabulary, promote theory of mind development, nurture critical thinking, and engage in meaningful conversation. Participants will learn the purpose of each read and how to incorporate them into practice.

During this session participants will:

  • Define the START Read strategy and PAT vocabulary strategy.
  • Identify and state the purpose of using three reads within the START strategy.
  • Learn to use “think-alouds” to illustrate thoughts and feelings when reading aloud.

    Jennifer Wallace is a SLP and LSLS Cert. AVT. She is currently lead teacher/SLP in the Stepping Stones program at Atlanta Speech School working with children who have speech/language needs in a therapeutic classroom setting.

    Erica W. Welch is a LSLS Cert. AVEd and the Director of the Katherine Hamm Center at the Atlanta Speech School. She has served multiple roles at the School as well as providing strengths-based coaching/mentoring.

  • Kathy Newbern, M.Ed., CCC-SLP, LSLS Cert. AVT

    Kathy Newbern is a SLP and LSLS Cert. AVT in the Katherine Hamm Center at the Atlanta Speech School. She also provides instruction and mentoring to professionals pursuing LSLS certification.
