Description
Caregiver Coaching in Early Childhood Intervention
Young children learn through interactions with the important people in their lives. Ensuring caregivers know how to promote child learning as part of their everyday activities is key to success in early childhood intervention. This session will provide an overview of why and how to use five research-based characteristics of a coaching interaction style and the three characteristics of natural learning environment practices with caregivers. In doing so, caregivers will know how to use naturally occurring routines and experiences (i.e., mealtime, dressing, play, shopping, etc.) as opportunities for children to practice existing skills and learn new ones.
During this session, participants will:
- Explain the rationale for using a coaching interaction style and natural learning environment practices with caregivers in early childhood intervention.
- Define the five research-based characteristics of a coaching interaction style.
- Identify natural learning opportunities with caregivers to serve as the context for early intervention.
