Maureen Connelly Jones, PhD, RN
University of Kentucky
Dr. Maureen Connelly Jones is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Management and Policy and Director of Graduate Studies of the Master of Health Administration (MHA) Program. Dr. Jones joined the College in 2021 as the Program Director of the MHA program. She joins the faculty with over 20 years of higher education experience and 30 years in the healthcare industry. She is a member of the Accreditation Council for the Commission of Accreditation on Healthcare Management Education (CAHME) and served as a fellow for four years before this appointment. In previous roles, she coordinated accreditation and curriculum, developed online courses and certificate programs, and has taught in residential and online programs. Dr. Jones' research interests lie in educational assessment/outcome and healthcare leaders' competencies.

Lynn T. Downs, PhD
University of the Incarnate Word
Lynn Downs is an Associate Professor at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) in San Antonio, Texas. She earned her PhD in Public Administration and Political Science from American University. Prior to joining UIW, Lynn served in the U.S. Navy as a healthcare administrator for 23 years and as assistant professor at the Army Baylor Graduate Program in Health and Business Administration. Lynn is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and past ACHE Regent for Central and South Texas regions, a Commissioner for the Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME); Chairman of the CAHME Substantive Change Committee; member of the CAHME Candidacy Committee; past Chairman, Filerman Prize Committee Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA); member of the AUPHA Leadership Development Committee; past member of the Health Administration Press/AUPHA editorial board; and member of AUPHA Certification Review team.

Cathleen Erwin, PhD, MBA
Auburn University
Cathleen Erwin is department chair and associate professor in the Department of Political Science. She holds a PhD in administration-health services from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as well as an MBA from Auburn University Montgomery and BA from Auburn University. Prior to joining the faculty at Auburn in 2010, Erwin spent more than twenty-five years working in the fields of administration, development, public relations and communications for nonprofit health care, higher education and arts organizations. She has taught a variety of courses in the HADM program, including healthcare delivery systems, healthcare management and leadership, insurance and reimbursement, health information technology, healthcare quality management, and the Capstone seminar. Her research focuses on a variety of strategic management issues faced by health care organizations. Erwin was named the Ralph “Shug” Jordan Endowed Professor of Writing at Auburn University in 2019, and serves as co-chair of the University Writing Committee. She has been honored with the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Health Care Management Division of the Academy of Management (2020), the Teaching Excellence Award from the Auburn University College of Liberal Arts (2014) and the Auburn University Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching Award (2017). Erwin is a past president and active member of the Alabama Health Executives Forum, the officially-designated state chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). She is active in service to the Health Care Management division of the Academy of Management, the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA), and the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA).

Learning Objectives
Attendees of the half-day session will be able to:
  • Articulate the role and responsibilities of an academic program director, including key functions as described in the position description, challenges, and best practices;
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the higher education structure, including its various components, stakeholders, governance models, and the interrelationships between different levels and entities within the higher education system as it applies to the PD role;
  • Develop effective curriculum designs and course sequencing plans, taking into consideration the alignment of learning objectives, course content, and assessments to create a logical and systematic educational pathway that enhances student competency attainment;
  • Assess and enhance student success by effectively evaluating the learning outcomes and relevant metrics to monitor, measure, and improve program outcomes, ensuring that students achieve desired educational goals and competencies. Ensure that students receive feedback on competency attainments;
  • Understand the fundamental principles of marketing and communication, including key concepts and strategies to reach the target audience and create a communication plant to share the program story;
  • Discuss ways to integrate DEI concepts and perspectives into the course curriculum, including diverse perspectives, voices, and cultural content in a meaningful and inclusive manner and identify partnership organizations that can help implement these ideas throughout the program.

Course Description
This course is tailored to empower you in your pivotal role as an Academic Program Director. We will explore the multifaceted aspects of academic leadership, providing you with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in the dynamic higher education environment. The curriculum covers a spectrum of key areas: student success, marketing, curriculum development, advanced program planning and implementation, and accreditation processes, and student and faculty engagement. We'll explore effective strategies for fostering a positive learning environment by integrating justice, equity, inclusion, belongingness, and diversity and ensuring academic excellence. Through a variety of interactive activities including case studies and collaborative peer discussions, you'll gain practical tools to address the unique challenges faced by an academic program director. By the end of the program, you'll have foundational skills to steer your program toward success.
