Dr. Casey Pierce is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI). Her research focuses on the changing nature of work as it relates to technology, policy and knowledge sharing in organizations.
Currently, Dr. Pierce is studying how telehealth/telemedicine platforms and policies impact clinicians’ work practices and professional identities. This research addresses implications concerning how digital platforms shape new models of patient care and the rise of contingent work arrangements in the health care industry.
Dr. Pierce earned her PhD from the media, technology and society program at Northwestern University School of Communication. She also received her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Southern California.
Many of us have had to learn new technology platforms this year as we have shifted to remote work. We have perfected the video chat; we understand how to download and use “apps” or applications; and we certainly know how to text. But, do our clients understand these new modalities? Can those with visual deficits comprehend what to do? How do we help those technology naïve clients or those who don’t understand how to use new platforms, tools and apps?
Fortunately, there are solutions, some tried-and-true, some conceived during this year of adaptation. Today’s webinar will help the professional case manager as they work to educate, inform and enable vulnerable clients through the use of technology. The speaker will offer coaching tips, guidance and advice about how to use new and old technology tools for this population.
After listening to the webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the application and benefits of telehealth for vulnerable patients with chronic disease or ongoing conditions;
- Discuss how to schedule and prepare for virtual visits with patients with complex medical, social and psychological needs;
- Identify how to coordinate care for geriatric patients with multiple health providers via virtual platforms;
- Evaluate how patient privacy concerns differ during a virtual visit
