Americans Abroad: USPHS Case Manages Covid Patients Stranded in Japan

This presentation will describe the deployment of a USPHS team to Japan in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is a firsthand account of this team in supporting and repatriating elderly Americans stranded on a cruise ship in the early days of the pandemic accomplished by establishing and maintaining the partnership between the USPS, Japanese Ministry of Health, and the US embassy in Japan.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe the role of the USPHS in dealing with US citizens outside the country as a result of the pandemic.
  • Explain the criticality of communication for both clients and families.
  • Discuss the criticality to advocate for these clients.
