Care Coordination: Considerations in Work Related Amputations

Case management of work-related amputations is being impacted by newer technology and care guidelines. In this session, the speaker will discuss common causes of amputation and give a brief comparison of limb salvage vs. amputation. The care team, as well as the typical process from acute to rehab will be provided, including the durable medical equipment (DME) and therapies that are recommended for these cases. The session will include a discussion of prosthetic devices, replacement frequency, along with driving and home modifications. Newer technology such as targeted muscle reinnervation will be described, and resources will be shared along with recommendations for transitioning the worker back into the workforce.

Learning Outcomes:
  • Identify three (3) major areas for focused care coordination for the work-related amputee 
  • Proactively evaluate for potential secondary complications following limb loss 
  • Explain improvements in technology and why a client might benefit from such devices
  • Identify and utilize resources to assist clients with care and to learn to self-advocate
