A Look at Legal Issues and End of Life Decisions: Overcoming the hurdles through effective communication

Speaker:

Michael J. Demoratz, PhD, LCSW, CCM

Description:

Health care professionals and case managers often face intricate legalities when advocating on behalf of a client making end-of-life decisions. The session aims to unravel the complex interplay between the legal expectations and the practical aspects of honoring a client's end-of-life wishes. Participants will learn how to employ effective communication strategies to navigate these legal challenges, ensuring that they can advocate for their clients' preferences clearly and legally, as well as understand the key differences between the POLST paradigm and traditional advanced directives. This webinar also includes communication techniques that respect the delicate balance of legal frameworks while fostering a compassionate approach to end-of-life care with not only the client, but also family and caregivers.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Differentiate the POLST paradigm from traditional Advance Directives
  • Recognize the key components of the POLST paradigm forms
  • Relate one example of how POLST and similar documents would be useful in each: hospice, home care & hospital settings
