This webinar will feature a presentation on tsunami design, specifically the upcoming provisions in ASCE 7-16 (IBC-2018). Over the last decade the world has seen four major tsunamis strike populated areas around the globe, all four causing massive loss of life and property. Even most recently, in the 2011 Tohoku event which occurred in a region that has experienced many tsunamis, there was significant loss of life and damage to most infrastructure. That being said, some structures that were adequately designed for tsunami loads performed very well, proving that tsunami resistant buildings are feasible. Here in the United States, local jurisdictions have begun to place more emphasis on planning for a major tsunami event by expanding beyond evacuation routes to planning for the event more comprehensively. However under current code in the United States (IBC 2015 and before) we do not design for tsunamis however in 2011, ASCE commissioned a subcommittee to begin putting together a set of provisions to be included in ASCE 7. The result is the new Chapter 6 for the 2016 edition of ASCE 7 which provides design loads for tsunamis. These loads will allow engineers to design structures to help communities to begin to develop tsunami resistant infrastructure. These provisions will contain requirements that will be very different than other loading such as wind or seismic. The presentation will include background on tsunami behavior, overview of recent events, background on the development of the provisions, an overarching summary of the provisions, and some brief design examples.

    Seth Thomas, P.E., S.E., works at KPFF Consulting Engineers and is a licensed structural engineer. Seth has been involved in code development his entire career and currently is a voting member of the tsunami, flood, seismic and main committees for the ASCE 7-28. Seth has been involved in multiple tsunami and performance based seismic design projects including OSU Gladys Valley Marine Studies Building (first tsunami vertical evacuation projects in Oregon), Ocosta Middle School (first tsunami evacuation project in Washington), the Portland International Airport PDXNext Project, Multnomah County Central Courthouse (MCCCH), and the VA Portland Hospital Seismic Retrofit.

Webinar Cancellation

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line "NCSEA Webinar Cancellation" and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:
  • Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
  • Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
