North America’s largest mass timber building opened Summer 2021. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the new campus consists of 645,000 sft of commercial office space, a 550,000 sft parking structure, and fitness and wellness center. Designing and constructing mass timber buildings requires a complete transformation of the traditional design process. Special consideration needs to be taken in regards to material procurement, fabrication, integration with other trades, tolerance with other building materials, and given that mass timber is a newer (to the US) material, to permitting. This presentation will highlight the benefits and challenges of using mass timber and illustrate the lessons learned from this project as well as from other recent mass timber projects.
