03.16.2023 | Structural Failures and Forensic Engineering 2008 Fatal NYC Tower Crane Collapse - A Case Study

Following the collapse of an external self-climbing tower crane in New York City, on March 15, 2008, Ove Arup & Partners, PC (Arup) was hired by the New York City Department of Buildings (NYCDOB) to provide engineering and investigative services. The collapse resulted in seven fatalities and multiple injuries, and damage to adjacent buildings. The resulting trials were for both civil and criminal charges. The investigation included safety issues, materials science, code compliance, structural engineering design, and means and methods. The presentation is a synopsis of the event, investigation, and results.
