Mass timber structural framing systems have high strength-to-weight ratios, are dimensionally stable, and are quickly becoming systems of choice for sustainably-minded designers, forward-thinking owners and those pursuing tall wood buildings. This presentation will provide a detailed look at the structural design processes associated with a variety of mass timber products, including glued-laminated timber (glulam), cross-laminated timber (CLT), and nail-laminated timber (NLT). Applications for the use of these products in gravity force-resisting systems under modern building codes will be discussed. Other technical topics will include mass timber floor panel vibration criteria, composite timber-concrete composite slab systems, connection options and design considerations, and detailing and construction best practices. Mass timber framing components are often left exposed to act as a finish while taking advantage of their aesthetics. As such, they are often required to provide a fire-resistance rating while maintaining structural integrity in the event of a fire. This session will also discuss structural design of mass timber elements under fire conditions.

    Ricky McLain, P.E., S.E., is a licensed Structural Engineer and Professional Engineer in the states of New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, and is a Technical Director of Architectural and Engineering Solutions for the WoodWorks program. He has extensive experience in lead engineer roles related to the structural design, project management and construction administration of new single-family, multi-family, municipal, industrial, and mixed-used buildings. He is Executive Director of the Structural Engineers Association of Vermont and is a member of the ASCE Structural Wind Engineering Committee. Ricky received a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Maine and an MS in Structural Engineering from Norwich University.

Webinar Cancellation

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line "NCSEA Webinar Cancellation" and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:
  • Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
  • Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
