The Parametric Genome - A Structural Approach

Data has become an essential tool for decision making in today’s modern world, across all industries. Clients are looking to engineers in all fields to deliver them the information necessary to make key business decisions and develop building designs. In the field of structural engineering, the presented data may vary; it may be structural steel tonnage for various floor framing configurations and column spacings, it may be economy scale applied to a repetitive connection type, it may be structural optimization for lateral drift or serviceability of a high-rise, or it may literally be anything else. The potential uses of data derived from computational, or computer-aided, algorithmic design are virtually limitless.

Computer-aided algorithmic design allows us, as designers, the ability to run millions (or even billions) of simulations to collect meaningful data. How this data is collected and presented is up to the user, but the ability to automatically run these simulations is there through the use of today’s computational power. During the presentation, we are going to touch on a few specific uses of algorithmic aided design; these examples are as follows:

1. Simple optimized parametric structural truss
2. Simple optimized parametric structural steel bay designed for gravitational forces
3. Drift and strength optimization of structural members in a high-rise commercial tower
4. Strength and deflection optimization of a parametric long-span dome roof
5. Strength, deflection, and economy of scale optimization of a parametric geodesic sphere

The possibilities of parametric design are relatively endless, and we feel that all projects and firms, no matter how small or large, may benefit tremendously from this type of analysis and design methodology presented; the examples and topics will vary from simple to complex and offer unique opportunities for everyone in the audience to benefit from.

  • Steve Reichwein, P.E., S.E.

    Steve Reichwein joined Severud Associates in 2009 as an engineer after interning with the firm the summer before. He progressed to senior engineer in 2013, advanced to associate shortly thereafter, and was elevated to senior associate in 2020. Steve was promoted to associate principal in 2024. Steve’s background in architectural engineering along with his design experience has enabled him to engineer his clients’ visions effectively, regardless of their complexity. Steve is a leader of the firm’s parametric and algorithmic design team, a group whose analyses inform critical engineering decisions for major projects. These include the immersive entertainment venue Sphere in Las Vegas, Nevada, and 20 Times Square and Madison Square Garden V–The Transformation, both in New York, to which Steve made significant contributions. His other challenging projects include the TSX Broadway and Palace Theater redevelopment, the high-rise office building One Vanderbilt Avenue, and the new East 97th Street campus of the Marymount School of New York, all in Manhattan. Steve represents the structural engineering profession within the Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) as a member of the Board of Directors and as co-chair of the Programs Committee. He also serves the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) as a member of the ASCE 24 Flood Design committee.

Webinar Cancellation

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line "NCSEA Webinar Cancellation" and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:
  • Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
  • Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
