Innovations in wood construction are making it more feasible for wood construction to be designed and built to larger heights and areas than what the current code permits. This is leading to codes change proposals for the 2021 International Building Code (IBC) which includes expanding Type IV construction and defining Mass Timber as: “structural elements of Type IV construction primarily of solid, built-up, panelized or engineered wood products that meet minimum cross section dimensions of Type IV construction.” Included in mass timber construction is cross-laminated timber (CLT) and nail-laminated timber (NLT) – both of which are already incorporated in the IBC and the National Design Specification^® (NDS^®) for Wood Construction. This presentation will provide engineers with an overview of current codes and standards related to the use of CLT and NLT as well as step-by-step examples on the structural and fire design of these structural elements for roof and floor applications.
