Navigating the AI Landscape: Essentials for Health Administration Education (June 2024)

Ashleigh Allgood, MPH

Ashleigh Allgood is a faculty member in the Department of Health Services Administration at the University of Alabama Birmingham. Her primary role is teaching undergraduate and graduate students quality improvement, project management, communication, teamwork, change management and strategic management principles. Ms. Allgood has ten years of experience guiding teams through quality and process improvement initiatives. She began her career developing and implementing evidence-based strategies to reduce avoidable hospitalizations among nursing home residents. Most of the projects that she has been involved in recently have been related to patient experience and healthcare utilization. Ms. Allgood has a background in healthcare simulation which she uses to test new systems and workflows prior to implementation. Ms. Allgood is a Certified Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Medical Sociology where she is researching the intersection of trust and healthcare. Ms. Allgood is specifically interested in building a research portfolio around the social construct of trust and trust's impact on team performance and patient safety.
Duration
This course will take place in-person on Monday, June 3, 2024, 1:00-4:30 PM in Tampa, FL, preceding AUPHA's Annual Meeting.
Learning Objectives
Faculty participants will:
  • Explore AI Basics for Education: Actively explore essential concepts of AI, including its potential applications and impact in educational settings.
  • Modify Assignments with AI: Learn to adapt current course materials to include AI elements.
  • Design and Implement AI-Enhanced Teaching: Develop and execute teaching strategies that effectively incorporate AI tools for improved student engagement and learning outcomes.
  • Evaluate and Adapt to AI Evolution: Continuously assess the effectiveness of AI applications in teaching and adapt strategies to align with the latest AI advancements.
  • Create Inclusive AI Learning Environments: Apply AI in ways that support diverse student needs.
Course Description
Upon completion of this AI Integration workshop, participants will have acquired both theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for integrating AI tools into their educational practices. Attendees will leave the workshop equipped with an understanding of how to incorporate AI into their current curriculum, both in traditional and online settings. Specifically, they will have learned how to adapt existing course assignments to include AI elements, design and implement innovative AI-enhanced teaching strategies, and continuously adapt to evolving AI technologies in health administration education.

Geoffrey Silvera, PhD, MHA
The University of Alabama at Birmingham
Geoff Silvera is a management scholar primarily focused on the influence of executive decision-makers on end-user outcomes. He presently serves as an Assistant Professor of Health Services Administration in the Department of Health Services Administration at The University of Alabama-Birmingham’s School of Health Professions. Previously, he served on the faculty at Auburn University. His doctorate in Health Policy and Administration was completed at the Pennsylvania State University. Both his masters and bachelors degrees were earned at the University of Florida. In addition to his academic position, Geoff presently serves on the editorial board of HCMR, QMHC, and as the Associate Editor of PXJ.
