Description

The presentation will identify the most common errors that structural engineers make when performing seismic design and calculations. The presentation will then demonstrate the proper application of Codes and Standards so as to avoid errors and misapplications. The presentation will be based upon IBC 2012, ASCE 7-10, AISC 360-10, AISC 341-10, ACI 318-11 (including Chapter 21 and Appendix D) and other Standards. Topics related to common errors will include:

Seismic Design Category, Importance Factor, Load Path, R Factor, Irregularities, Overstrength, Redundancy, Vertical Seismic Effect, Allowable Stress Design, Orthogonal Effects, Effective Seismic Weight, Distribution of Base Shear Over Height, Modal Response Spectrum Analysis, Accidental Torsion, Drift, Diaphragms, Non-Structural Components, as well as other items.

    Thomas F. Heausler, P.E., S.E., has over 40 years experience in structural engineering, is licensed in 27 States, and serves as an independent structural engineer, engaged by engineering firms, for mentoring, senior review, and seismic code interpretations and guidance. Mr. Heausler serves as Past-Chair of the NCSEA Seismic Code Advisory Committee and has been a voting member of ASCE 7 Seismic Committee since 2006. Mr. Heausler has taught Structural Analysis and Earthquake Engineering at the University of Missouri Kansas City and he holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from Tulane University. He has performed as a grader for the NCEES National Structural Engineering 16 hour exam. Mr. Heausler has frequently presented at national and regional conferences and has authored articles for Structure Magazine.

Webinar Cancellation

By NCSEA: If a webinar is canceled by NCSEA, all registered attendees will be notified via email. NCSEA will issue a full refund if the event cannot be rescheduled. If the event is rescheduled and a registrant can not attend on the rescheduled date, NCSEA will offer a credit in the amount of the purchase price.

By Registrant/Attendee: Cancellations must be made at least 24 hours in advance of the webinar (or the first webinar in the case of a series or bundle) and in writing via email ( ncsea@ncsea.com) with the subject line "NCSEA Webinar Cancellation" and include the following in the body of the email: Title of Webinar, Order/Invoice Number, Name of Registrant, and Reason for Cancellation. No telephone refund requests will be accepted.

If the request has been approved, NCSEA can do one of the following:
  • Refund the amount back to the original order payment method (a $25 cancellation processing fee will be assessed)
  • Issue a full credit on the purchaser’s account that can be used towards a future webinar/event.

If you are unable to attend the webinar and the cancellation deadline has passed, a recording will be available (in most cases) in the Education Portal after the webinar has concluded.
Refunds are not granted due to attendee technology issues. It is your responsibility as the webinar attendee to test your computer setup prior to the start of the webinar.
