Description
When dealing with existing buildings design professionals are allowed to either show that the building complies with the International Building Code (IBC) or follow the requirements of the International Existing Building Code (IEBC). With regards to special inspections the IEBC simply states that the permit submittal documents should include “special inspection and structural observation programs”. No other discussion is provided in the IEBC in regards to special inspection, material testing or structural observation requirements. The purpose of this seminar is to clarify what these requirements are with regards to existing buildings. To do this we will review the requirements of the IBC in addition to ASCE 41-13 and applicable material standards. In order to get a clear understanding of how to adapt the IBC special inspection requirements we will look at several types of projects including unreinforced masonry, steel moment frame, concrete tilt-up, and wood construction.
