Animal Assisted Crisis Response: Ethics and Applications

Animal Assisted Crisis Response is a specialized class of Animal Assisted Activity (AAA) wherein highly trained and certified/registered volunteer human-animal teams assist crisis responders to support the psychological and physiological needs of individuals impacted by and responding to crises and disasters in complex, unpredictable environments. In this workshop, the presenter will discuss the unique application of AACR and describe how this unique approach fits within existing Crisis and Disaster response approaches. Provider competency and animal welfare will be topics of particular emphasis, and the presenter will orient attendees to reputable sources for further training related to AACR, as well as organizations to contact for team deployments.
Objectives Include:
-Define key terms and concepts relevant to AACR
-Differentiate AACR from other Animal Assisted Intervention approaches
-Describe the unique ethical and legal considerations associated with AACR, including scope of practice
-Identify appropriate professional organizations and other resources relevant to AACR

This course meets criteria for 3 hours of ethics continuing education by the Oklahoma Board of Behavioral Health for Oklahoma LPC and LMFT license holders, by the Oklahoma State Board of Licensed Social Workers (provider #20220088) for Oklahoma LCSW license holders, by the Oklahoma Board of Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselors (certificate #20220018) for LADC and CADC license holders (3 hours ethics CEUs), and for Oklahoma case managers (3 hours ethics CEUs).
